It's Gonna Get Better
02:09
|
|||
It’s gonna get better
some day some how
this will be the hard time we remember
in some happier now
It’s gonna get better
someday somehow
There’s gonna be good times
They’ll be coming soon
This will be the dark hall that led
to a brighter room
there’s gonna be good times
someday somehow
There’s gonna be a bluebird
in a blue sky
Happiness will land on your shoulder
in some coming by and by
There’s gonna be a bluebird
someday somehow
There’s gonna be sunny afternoons
the mornings will open
like a spring flower in bloom
we’ll be sitting in the shade
someday somehow
It’s gonna get better
some day some how
this will be the hard time we remember
in some happier now
It’s gonna get better
someday somehow
There’s gonna be good times
They’ll be coming soon
This will be the dark hall that led
to a brighter room
there’s gonna be good times
someday somehow
There’s gonna be a bluebird
in a blue sky
Happiness will land on your shoulder
in some coming by and by
There’s gonna be a bluebird
someday somehow
There’s gonna be sunny afternoons
the mornings will open
like a spring flower in bloom
we’ll be sitting in the shade
someday somehow

Come On Back

Come On Back
Let us say I woke up this morning
to find myself in this brand new life
10 years ago I would never have believed
I’d wake up someone else’s happy wife
and that you would not be out there in the kitchen
making coffee and talking to the cat
Everything turns on the moment
Come on back from the dead and say “Hey I wrote that.”
CH
Come on back and tell us your story
Fall out of heaven with a perfect rhyme
Come on back and claim the words I stole from your song
They’re worth stealing, it’s a really good line
Sometimes I wonder how it all worked out
how in the moment you just can’t see
how the cat and the porch and the whole damn life
are setting you up to set you free
it was like getting on a ride at a summer fair
that goes up and down, too fast around the bend
I never got in those lines cause I am not the kind
who wants to be screaming at the end
Every life is a bit unfinished
Some business will get deferred
Some of us are just born with the knack
for the economy of the word

A Beautiful Sound
03:18
|
|||
Here’s how we float down the river bailing the boat all the way
oh my brave companions our long ago watertight days
some little god swims under the boat pushing it day and night
our early water it’s long gone out of sight
we never learned all of the theory we did a lot of it wrong
we tried to survive tried to arrive at the end of the song
All over creation the world spins round
the millions ways we make a beautiful sound
I painted some words under the gunnel up by the bow
I painted yes I painted no I painted somehow
And oh my brave companions bailing along with me
words inside your boat no one else can see
some little god under the boat pushing it day and night
oh my brave companions once we were watertight
You learn a lot of the theory trying to get through the song
you learn a lot of what’s right from how you’re doing it wrong
All over creation the world spins round
the millions ways we make a beautiful sound

The Driveway
02:41
|
|||
Last night after dinner
I walked outside
I lay down on the driveway
and looked up at the sky
I lay down to give up
I lay down to say no
I wanted to escape
the driveway would not let go
I have a mind that thinks with time
an answer can be found
the driveway offered no solution
it offered the ground
It’s hard to pin down
what I looked up there to find
have you been lying in your driveway
searching for relief of some kind?
When I’d laid there long enough
to hold what I was feeling
I got up and thanked the driveway
for it’s healing
When I have to lie down
before I can get up again
the driveway can be
the perfect friend

Where Have You Gone Bluebird?
Where have you gone my happy bluebird
your summer song like I never heard
now the mornings are dark the afternoons are grey
the best that I can do is get the wood laid away for
The winter has a song
we learn it by degree
we sing fa la la low
the wind and cold
all the happy has fallen from me
I know that I am made like a handful of thorns
reach for the petals and your skin will get torn
by the nettles that hide in my wide open field
I was never good at soft I’m pretty good at real
Once the summer queen danced with the prince of the dawn
The lightning bugs shined all night long
now the mornings are dark, the afternoons are grey
the best that I can do is get the wood laid away for

What if it Will Be Ok?
02:43
|
|||
What if it will be ok
what if it works out right
What if there is a new day
after this night?
What if we turn the corner
What if we make it through
My world is warmer
when my world has you
CH
We fall
we fall my friend
we fall
we get up again
I like stories
Once upon a time
I like when your hand
reaches for mine
if we lean in where it hurts
lean in to the mistake
if we lean in
where we break
Forgive me
I’ll forgive you
That’s all we
have to do

All you gotta do is be happy
happy’s gonna get you by
better not to make it a project
happy isn’t something you try
All you gotta know is it will come and go
it wasn’t designed to stay
All you gotta do is be happy
just some part of your day
All you gotta do is be happy
with the moment as it arrives
Happy isn’t looking for a medal
he’s just happy to be alive
but don’t hold too tight
that’s not what he likes
then he gets hard to find
Happy doesn’t really like mondays
but he’s trying to change his mind
he’s gonna hang around
putter out in the yard
he’s gonna let you down
if you expect him to work too hard
Happy is kind of like breathing
and kind of like a gordian knot
if all you want to do is be happy
pretty soon you’re not

I leave dishes in the sink
it bothers you a lot
it would better if I did not
leave dishes in the sink
I think we agree
the sink means one thing to you
and another to me
I leave dishes in the sink
my mother was a housewife
trapped in a time that said
here is your life
in dishes and cleaning
she found little meaning
but my mother stood at the sink
You'd think our dishwasher would make
this problem go away
but I remember my mother every day
reach and bend
load and unload again
my mother stood at the sink
she was married to a man
who was raised to think
what he did all day meant
he didn't have to stand at the sink
or the dust pan, or the broom
my mother told me
every day you clean one room
I built myself a life
with few dishes to do
cause when I stand at the sink
it's like she's standing there too
and I fall on my knees
and I praise the day
I can leave this sink and walk away
one dish, one room, one day after another
I leave dishes in the sink
to rescue my mother

How We Come Apart
03:13
|
|||
How We Come Apart
I don’t want to hear how you’re holding it together
I want to hear how you’re coming apart
not how you tell yourself to sit down and grow up
but how you hold your own broken heart
You break every dish in the kitchen
you spill your wine on the stairs
you threw out your back cleaning the closet
it’s going to hell do you care?
I want to know what you are packing
into the tiny bag in your dream
I’d like us to drink a little too much
agree it’s as bad as it seems
Some company here on the couch
I’ve been sitting here a lot
I don’t want to know how you’re coping
I want to know how you are not
How do we break and break
down to the smallest piece
the little particle where the psyche
finds release
the building block of the broken heart
it’s instructive how we come apart
I’m thinking of buying a tent
roughing it used to be something I know
the old woman saw this coming
she says it’s just how it has to go
I made a little madonna
out of modeling clay
I don’t give up all the time
just on alternate days
How do we break and break
down to the smallest part
the little piece where your personality starts
it’s instructive what we’re learning
how the house falls down when it’s burning

Put away all of your angry
put away all of your sad
put away all of the winter
and the dream you had
take out this little seed
it’s the hope we all need
I will love you to the moon.
To the moon
on the mornings when you’re feeling old
all the warnings you were ever told
seem to be coming true
To the moon
when you can’t remember how or why
love might hang in your sky
Put away all your receipts
what you owe and what you’ll keep
how you plan to survive
when the drop is sudden and steep
Let the afternoon come
maybe not get anything done
I will love you to the moon
Sing with all the space inside
let it fall out don’t even try
for the back of the room
or the notes way up high
let it vibrate in your chest
maybe this song will help you rest
I will love you to the moon.

Eat The Dandelion
02:34
|
|||
Eat The Dandelion
let us consider the lettuce
it's not as healthy as they said
like certain anxious dogs
it’s a little overbred
they made it as sweet as they can
that's what sells at the produce stand
it turns out something bitter
is better for you
The rabbits and the woodchucks have known this all along
they’re not getting into your garden
they’re out there in your lawn
when the world feels like a deadly place
eat something we can’t erase
you want to survive
eat the dandelion
If you want to make it up the hill
eat something we cannot kill
they want to give you one more pill
get down in the dirt maybe you will
find a trait you can admire
a living thing that won’t expire
Times are dire
eat the dandelion
the world will come to get you in oh so many ways
complicated chemicals rounding out your day
kraft cheetos stuff like that
gonna make us stupid and make us fat
I'll tell you where your health is at
go out and eat your yard
it's bitter it's true
turns out bitter is better for you
If you want to make it up the hill
eat something we cannot kill
they want to give you one more pill
get down in the dirt maybe you will
find a trait you can admire
a living thing that won’t expire
Times are dire
eat the dandelion

Kissing You All The Way Down
On a round planet
like a ball of twine
no matter how we plan it
this might all unwind
If it’s just how it is
that we will fall to the ground
I’d like to be kissing you all the way down
Once I made a list
of who I hoped to find
Number 1 was a kiss
Number 2 was kind
Number 3 was practical
how the bills get paid
I’d give up Number 3
but the kisses have to stay
I don’t mean the kind
where they pucker up tight
and what you see coming at you
can be a frightening sight
I mean the kind that connect
the earth to the sky
the flower of fire that goes shooting on by
Now the worlds in trouble
and things aren’t good
and I haven’t been kissing you
like I wish I would
I’ve been reading the news
and getting prepared
and my mouth gets thin and tight
when I’m scared
It troubles my mind
I cannot rest
when there’s a target pinned to your chest
so mostly I am just washing my hands
cleaning the counters
in a vigilant stand
to keep the world
from coming in here to get you
But right now I’ll just remember
the first kiss when I met you.

Love On The Wing
02:44
|
|||
I have a friend who paints love on his canvas
then paints it over sky blue
He says it is there to watch over and care
and help his painting get through
If you are in his painting
it is a wondrous thing
right overhead
love on the wing
It’s been hard to cope since we made the telescope
and we couldn’t find God in outer space
it made sense to believe
if God was there we would see
and the world became
a big empty place
Way up high in the blue of his sky
Michelangelo painted that hand
to watch over and care
look up there
love we can understand
Now we have a war between religion and science
and we paint a death star
and a rebel alliance
cause it threw all the questions open wide
what if there’s nothing out there on our side
Way up high in the blue of the sky
some wondrous thing
to watch over and care
so we look up there
for a hand or a heart or a wing
Yesterday I found a feather on the bike path
that runs through town
I can’t say it’s heaven sent
but right there on the pavement
a bit of love fell from the sky to the ground
Here I am in this painting
it is a wondrous thing
right over head
love on the wing
