about

I wrote this song for my friend Linda Schrade, who passed away from ALS in August 2015. She was a truly bright brave talented person, and a beautiful singer.

lyrics

Long long ago we sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow
when they asked the three of us to sing
we were young and we were strong
now your voice is gone
Long ago we sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow with you

Susie she would start
You came in next with the lower part
Your voices were the engine in the plane
I would come in high and we would fly
Long ago we sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Late at night you’d sing The Grey Funnel Line
with Jay at The Press Room at closing time
when he was in his cups - your voice could hold anyone up
but we all fall down

Now things have come undone
you’re as brave as they come
and you talk with your hands and your eyes
with time all things will fail
you were such a nightingale
Long ago we sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Maybe farther along we’ll understand why the song
has voices come in and then go
maybe we’ll know all about it
when we are over the rainbow
