about

These songs were written during a time when I was very interested in the myth of Eros and Psyche. I have always had a weakness for a good love story. Here is a short version. For more in-depth tellings of the myth and a list of other sources, visit the 'eros' page at www.CosySheridan.com

Psyche is a beautiful young girl. She is so beautiful that the goddess Aphrodite becomes jealous and insists that Psyche be forced to marry a monster. Psyche is tied to a rock out at sea. Aphrodite sends her son Eros to shoot an arrow into Psyche's heart to make her fall in love with a monster. Eros accidentally pricks himself with the arrow and falls in love with Psyche. He takes her away to live with him in his castle - where he only visits Psyche at night in her bed. He tells Psyche she is never to look at him.

Her sisters come to visit and tell her she must be married to a monster; and if she isn't, then prove it. Psyche lights a candle one night and shines it on Eros' face. He wakes up and runs away (back to his mother Aphrodite). Psyche is left alone to wander the world searching for him.

Aphrodite gives Psyche impossible tasks, telling Psyche that if she does them correctly then Eros will return. The last impossible job is to go get the beauty cream of the Queen of the Dead (see song #7). Psyche dies trying to perform this last task; Eros returns and turns her into an immortal so that she can live with him on Mt. Olympus, the home of the gods.
